    Java development

    Hi Everybody,
I want to use #develop as the IDE for java application development. At present my requirement is nothing fancy, just plain J2ME code. I love #develop and want to keep using it, even though many may suggest that I use some Java based IDE.

I am willing to put some efforts and create a binding for java. Can anyone guide me where to start?

    Here is my simple plan:
    1. Create a binding/add-in/whatever so that we can create java project/solution
    2. Create stubs for java packages, so that they can be imported as assemblies
    3. Use javac for compilation.

Please suggest how it can be done.

    Regards,
    Ajay Dwivedi

Unless there's a .NET implementation of Java I highly doubt you want to attempt this. My understanding is that SharpDevelop is designed to work with the .NET platform only.

    Re: Java development

My wish is to be able to use SharpDevelop as an Intelligent Editor for Java. Since I am working on J2ME (mobile) development, I am not happy using the heavy and slow elephants like eclipse. They are a real drag on my not-so-high-end laptop.

As I said, my requirement is to be able to write syntactically correct java code - and I believe Sharpdevelop would be easily extensible to allow this. I am not worried about the compiling java to .NET IL.

Are there any docs available for how Boo extension was developed, or any other helpful docs/pointers on how to to do the above.

#devlop can be used for development for any language, even non-.NET ones. It is just a matter of writing the necessary addIns and backend bindings.

To get you started, look at the files in the doc folder of the #develop source code, maybe read the book (it is about an older version, so some things have changed - but it is free for download. Chapte18, - the "lost chapter" is about language bindings) and you will also want to look at the addIn tutorials in the wiki.

By the way, Daniel Grunwald who wrote the Boo Binding also did those tutorials, so they should be what you need.

Thanks. I hope I would be able to cook up something that would not only serve my purpose, but may also be of some use to othes.

Hello! I am a J2Me developer too. And I get same idea that you have. I think creating binding for java micro edition is not wery hard task. I think the hard part will be creating a debugger for j2me.
