    SharpDevelop IDE

Hi I always have been supporting open source developments; I have been working along of my professional career mainly with Java apps(Stand Alone and Desktop) so I would like to start up to know about NET technology and I have been looking an open source IDE to do that so I would like to know for you guys if you recommend this SharpDevelop IDE to accomplish my goal.

Disclaimer: I'm a member of the #develop core team, so I'm probably biased.

#develop should be a good starting point for you. It is written entirely in .net languages, has an extensible and resuable architecture and comes with a number of samples and tech notes.

I recommend you download the source code package to get started by reading the tech notes enclosed, then look at some addin samples, then the SDA (#develop for applications) samples. Some further reading might be "the book", however that is about an old version of #develop, so things have changed somewhat since that was written.

    Re: SharpDevelop IDE

Since I'm NOT a developer of the project, I figured I'd chime in also. I've been using SharpSevelop since version 1.1, and it was my first dive into .NET development. I saw that to get some of the capabilities I wanted with Visual Studio, I'd need the Professional version priced at around $1,000. Since I mostly work on smaller projects for Rent-A-Coder, it would have taken too long to break even, so I didn't get into .NET for a while.

Once I discovered SD, I figured it could at least get me started, but I haven't looked back since - it has proven itself to be worth every penny that I would have spent on Visual Studio.  I've since used it on a few rather large projects, and where I once  was hesitant to tell clients I used it instead of Visual Studio, now I'm completely comfortable with it.
